Houston transit expansion
What is METRO Solutions Phase II?
METRO is planning a major expansion of Houston's transit system by 2012, including:
- The Universities light rail line running from the Post Oak area through Greenway Plaza, Upper Kirby,
Neartown, Midtown, and the Third Ward to TSU and the University of Houston
- Four new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines through Galleria/Uptown, on the North Side, in the East End, and Southeast Houston.
- Expanded local bus service, including improved "signature" service in several high-ridership transit corridors.
- Expanded HOV lane commuter bus service from suburban park-and-ride lots, including all-day, bidirectional service
in some corridors.
- New commuter rail service to northwest Houston (along US-290) and Fort Bend County (along US-90A).
- A new Intermodal Transit Facility just north of Downtown.
Studies are underway for several of these projects, and others will kick off in May 2006.
Houston must build additional high-capacity transit options that meet the needs of neighborhoods, businesses,
and the traveling public. CTC is committed to ensuring that an open and informed public process takes place to
plan these projects. We believe that:
- METRO must be allowed to study all of the possible alignments for each corridor so that we can all make
a sound decision about where to build each line;
- Houston needs more and better urban transit and we need to put it where the people and destinations are;
- We must protect our neighborhoods and businesses during construction; and
- Every neighborhood along each corridor deserves to participate in the planning process.
